Lawyers simply don't have the time to study heavy grammar books in order to improve their legal writing. That goes without saying. However, based on my 20 years' experience in the legal industry, both with DLA Piper (2008-2015) and, later, Deloitte (2020-2023), I noted that a lot of the mistakes that lawyers were making in their writing were very common - regardless of their jurisdiction or native language. For this reason, and out of impatience at losing a lot of time in memoranda review, I began to compile a series of rules to help the lawyers avoid these most common mistakes. This would later become my book, and training-course, The 36 Rules of Legal Writing. Within just a few weeks, through half a dozen legal writing training sessions, over 90% of these most common mistakes can be avoided - freeing up a lot of time for both writers and reviewers of legal works.
